Listen to this post Streamyx is a DSL broadband internet service offered by TM Net Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia Berhad. Streamyx subscribers make up the bulk of broadband users in Malaysia due to the lack of alternative services from other Malaysian internet service providers, like Jaring, NasionCom and TIME dotNet. Broadband services rolled out by these companies have limited service coverage, because the last mile connections are monopolised by Telekom Malaysia.
Many Streamyx users experience difficulties while surfing the web. Unstable DSLAMs, oversold bandwidth and poor phone line quality that causes high attenuation leads to average speeds between 200kbit/s and 1mbit/s, a fraction of advertised speeds. Recently, TM Net has employed traffic shaping to selectively shape the transfer speeds of P2P services. Bad basic networking infrastructure, management attitude, and the fact that TMnet Sdn. Bhd. (which provides Streamyx ADSL/SDSL service) has a monopoly of Malaysia’s broadband market all lead to an overall bad internet surfing experience for users.

I quickly went and download the firmware as this firmware is not distributed anymore in German nor any websites. Lucky for me, Epstone from the Onlinekosten.de forum uploaded the firmware back into his server again for me. Anyway, those who are using the same unit as me, you can download it from the address above. I haven’t upgrade the firmware yet. I want to read more on their discussion about the firmware before i proceed. As you know, the process is unreversible.

Finally, I got my my own 3G account. But there was a catch, which was somehow expected.. Only Celcom Postpaid users who also have a Streamyx account can sign up for the D88 plan. Sigh ! I had no choice but to take the D120 package instead. That means I have to pay RM120 per month for the 3G access.
I registered the line today noon and it got activated at around 7pm . The clerk told be it gonna take 24 hours to get my account activated. But instead, it took only 7 hours to get 3G-fied ! LoL . So far, the connection here at my apartment in Setapak Indah is acceptable. I get either 2–3 bar signal.
This is my download/upload test result…

Listen to this post I finally received the router after so many weeks of waiting. That darned thing travelled all the way from Germany to Malaysia. Sigh ! If only a transporter exist ~ A moment of happiness then struck by feeling of disappointment. Silly me~ I couldn’t get to test the 3G connection as there’s no Maxis 3G coverage in Seremban. I just remembered, my friend was complaining about his Maxis Wireless broadband. The connection was fine when he used the Maxis provided modem in Kajang and he’s able to log on to UTMS (3G) network. But when he comes back to Seremban he could only use GPRS connection and it sucks. Connection was awfully bad and he couldn’t even download stuffs… LoL
I wonder if there’s Celcom 3G coverage in Seremban. Their offer is kinda good and since one of my commentor, Michael has pointed out that Celcom has the best 3G coverage compared to Maxis. But I can say there’s not much difference between Celcom 3G and Streamyx since it shares the same network backbone. Anyhow, I’ll dropping by Celcom to sign up for their 3G services. The best part is I won’t be tied up by a contract. That means I can terminate it anytime I want. Sounds catchy though…. Hopefully there’s no “hidden” rules & regulation in tiny little font that you have to use a magnifier to read it… haha… Oh well, that’s how business goes and there’s no way to get around it…
Geez… it’s rather annoying seeing MSN notifier popping in and out while I was typing this.. Something is very wrong with my SuckMyx today. I’m getting disconnected almost every 5 minutes intermittently. MSN connection dropping off, DSL led kept blinking and my DSL SNR Margin is dropping to less than 5 dB. Everybody knows that Streamyx sucks but TMNet is dominating the ISP market. If other ISP were given fair chance, I’m sure there would be some better ISP other than TMNet.
